Pastor Mike's Corner

This last month was just awesome. We have met some new people, welcomed a few new members, started a new ministry or two, baptized one young lady, and another accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior! It is not by accident that we are seeing God work for it is a direct result of our faith. The behind the scenes ministries that take place for just our morning services alone is mind-boggling. So many people working together for the glory of our God! Everyone’s contribution makes the body move in submission to the Head, which is Jesus Christ.

As new souls come on board with their own spiritual gifts and unique God given abilities, we not only gain new friends to go through life together, but we become more effective in ministering first to one another and then to the community that He has placed us in. Remember our mission: To Worship our God. To Win people to Christ. To Connect them to the Body. To Disciple the believers. To Send them out.

The scriptures tell us that we are to be faithful to His call (and we have been) and He makes things grow (1 Corinthians 3). Seeing God at work in so many lives is a true blessing and I pray that you have praised Him for his wonderful work.

God Bless,
Pastor Mike

Jenkins tradition: Kiss of the first fish

No fish were physically harmed in the "kissing of the fish." There may have been some psychological damage done to these blue gill however. The boys should be fine. I had to kiss a fish when I was their age, and I'm just right. I dont really know why they are closing their eyes. I can only assume they've seen me kiss their mom and that's just the way its done!

Update

Let me update you all real quick. I’ve been real busy the last couple of weeks. I’ve got midterms this week, meetings galore, and a ministry that’s just expanding beyond my wildest dreams. It’s just amazing to watch what so many good Christians will do for our God when they are empowered to do so and I'm blessed to be a part of them!

In addition to the ministry, school, family, blog following, politics watching (may I say ship sinking watching), and griping about wealthfare, I’ve got a little book study going on (to fill all my dead time). My friend Nate bought me “Martin Luther King Jr. ‘I have a Dream’ Writings and Speeches” for my birthday last January and I’ve just got to it. I love it. Let me give you another quote to end the night on:

“True nonviolent resistance is not unrealistic submission to evil power. It is rather a courageous confrontation of evil by the power of love, in the faith that it is better to be the recipient of violence than the inflictor of it, since the latter only multiplies the existence of violence and bitterness in the universe, while the former may develop a sense of shame in the opponent, and thereby bring about a transformation and change of heart.”

How often I struggled with Jesus’ commands to offer the other cheek or give that extra mile to those that are evil. In my early Christian years, I admit I thought it was truly an act of cowardice. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrates how very brave and courageous it is to stab at evil with love in the hopes of winning a brother over.

Food for thought during times its hard to buy food

As you struggle to pay your gas bill this week, here’s a little insight on where your taxes are going in this bailout bill. A week after our government gave $85billion dollars to AIG, the top geniuses of this company went on a little week long retreat costing us $440,000 (link). Top CEOs were rewarded with massages, $1000 a night rooms, and some golf. I hope this helps them sleep as they figure out how to spend all this money that just might trickle down to the little 6year old girl down the street whose parents are begging for 5 bucks so that they can buy some lice treatment.

I'm all for not punishing buis. with crushing taxes...but as I help another member create a plan to help feed some of the kids in this community, it makes me a little sick to think that we are throwing every one's money at the wealthy so that they can have a little retreat.

1957 Facing the Challenge of a New Age

"True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force--tension, confusion, or war; it is the presence of some positive force--justice, good will and brotherhood."

A bitter Pill

Here’s what I see. Our country was like so many Americans: In debt over their heads praying for help. And just at the last minute, when they were going to have to do something about their own self-destructive behavior, another credit card company calls on the phone and offers them another credit card. The government has come to the rescue with another credit card. We haven’t fixed the problem, we just added more debt.

Now it may be the case that we are going to learn from this economic crisis—and I pray so. But as is my experience once the sense of urgency is gone, so is the “need” to make real life changing decisions.
The proof in the pudding is in California. I believe it was about 5 years ago they needed a bailout, and now, once again, they are about to come on their hands and knees begging for 7 billion more dollars (By the way, if your keeping count: 25 billion for the auto industry, 29 billion for Bear Sterns, 80% stake in AIG, 700 billion for the banking institution, 120 billion to make the former more appealing, and I wrote congress and asked for $60 bucks for a nice new shirt {they haven’t gotten back to me}). California didn’t learn their lesson and they're back again.

Here’s my uneducated point: Congress should’ve fixed the problem first, then looked for a way to bailout the people who got us in this mess. This stupid mentality of putting off a bitter pill for later is whacked…especially when the bitter pill is going to grow to such a size that it’s going to choke us to death when we do have to swallow it.

Non for Profits endorsing candidates

I would like to report that there are many non-for-profit organizations that are endorsing candidates out there and they need to have their subsidized income yanked! We literally have people in authority telling people which candidates and which party they should be voting for. Any dissension is met with a strong correction by the authority figure. Our young minds are being shaped by an organization that is funded or partly funded by the Government.

STOP funding our Universities and Schools!

Oh but Pastor Mike, Free Speech.

Well then give me some of that.
